THE INFORMATION IN THIS ARTICLE APPLIES TO:

Upgrading:

  • EFT Server version 5.x to EFT Server Enterprise version 6.x (EFT Server version 5.x is not upgradable to EFT Server (SMB) version 6.x)
  • EFT Server (SMB) 6.x to EFT Server Enterprise version 6.x
  • Secure FTP Server version 3 to EFT Server (SMB) or Enterprise version 6.x

DISCUSSION

The process for upgrading EFT Server, whether Enterprise or SMB , is very straight forward and should only take about 30 to 45 minutes if everything is done properly. (If you want to move EFT Server to a different computer, there is a separate article for that process.)

Prepare:

  1. Ensure that EFT Server v6 is compatible with your server by checking here: http://help.globalscape.com/help/eft6-2/System_Requirements_for_Server.htm
  2. Request and receive new EFT Server v6 licenses (if you have a Secure FTP or EFT Server 4 or 5 serial number) and a new DMZ 3 licenses (if you have a DMZ 1 or 2 serial number) from your account representative.
  3. Download the latest version of EFT Server (and the DMZ Gateway module, if needed) from one of the following:
  • Stop the EFT Server service to ensure all settings are preserved; once the FTP.cfg copy is complete, the service can be restarted.
  • Create a backup of the EFT Server data directory:
    • Windows 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GlobalSCAPE\EFT Server
    • Windows 2008: C:\ProgramData\GlobalSCAPE\EFT Server
  • Create a backup of the registry.
  • If the Auditing and Reporting Module (ARM) is active, create a back-up of the EFT Server database.
  • Upgrade:

    1. Use the installer to upgrade EFT Server and, if you use ARM, update the database; before clicking Finish, clear the check box used to start the service.
    2. Add the EFT Service account in Windows to run the EFT Server Service.
    3. Ensure that the EFT Service account has full rights to the application data directory and the site data directory.
    4. Start the EFT Server service.
    5. If upgrading from a version prior to EFT Server v6, register EFT Server (all modules will have remained registered).
    6. If you will be using the DMZ Gateway module, in the EFT Server Admin console activate the DMZ Gateway 3 serial number (using the command located in the Help Menu).
    7. If you use or will be using the Secure Ad Hoc Transfer Module or DMZ Gateway Module, use the corresponding installers to install or upgrade (instructions for both are available in the online help.)
    8. Verify that the EFT sites are working properly by testing connections, event rules, and reports.

    Rollback:

    1. Uninstall the newer EFT Server version.
    2. If nothing else changed between the EFT Server install and rollback process, restore the registry.
    3. Install the previous EFT Server version, skipping the ARM portion; before clicking Finish, clear the check box to start the service.
    4. With the EFT Server service stopped, paste the backup of the previous EFT Server version folder over the default location:
    • Windows 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GlobalSCAPE\EFT Server
    • Windows 2008: C:\ProgramData\GlobalSCAPE\EFT Server
  • Start the EFT Server Service.
  • If the Auditing and Reporting Module (ARM) was active, restore the ARM Database (be aware that the reports will not function until the restore is complete).
  • Verify that the EFT Server sites are working properly by testing connections, event rules, and reports.
